"What I love most about this work is the shared intimacy. I have the opportunity to deeply connect with the wood, then share it with someone else for them to connect with.

Peace of Wood Studios is a collaborative effort of peace loving people inspired by nature. We share our love through our work and our actions. Peace of Wood is open to all. Please stop by and visit our studio in the rolling hills of the Finger Lakes region in Southern New York.

Each finished book is the culmination of many processes. We start by walking the forest in search of fallen trees. These forests include the Redwoods of northern California, the tropical cloud forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica, and the temperate hardwood forests of New York. After finding the wood that speaks to us, we carry the log from the forest to our portable mill. Some species include Black Cherry, Black Walnut, Red Oak, White Oak, Ash, Redwood, Cocobolo, Guanacasle, and Hira Rosa. We also use reclaimed wood from old barns, houses, and old lumberyards. After milling the logs, the boards must be stacked and covered to dry for at least one year.

Once a piece is selected and cut into tablets, we sometimes conceptualize a certain design or just begin carving and let the wood guide us. First roughing out then finishing. Finishing consists of several steps of hand sanding, multiple coats of boiled linseed oil, and a final coat of beeswax. We use only %100 recycled or acid free, chlorine free hemp paper hand bound to the wood covers using the ancient Coptic stitch. The finished work is a %100 natural, sturdy, hand worked album ready to be filled with your magic!
